Lucidity Through the Carnival

by Michael Szul on

Key 23 is no more—a black hole in the Internet—but back in 2004 I started a group blog with a number of Internet denizens to explore occult themes, the surviving counterculture, and the swiftly dominating cyberculture. Below is an article from that experiment—posted and backdated here for historical accuracy. Broken links removed.

Below is a description of a lucid dreaming experience I had.

I lied there - eyes closed - as blotches of clarity graced my inner field of vision. This wasn't inner intuition or new age imaginal sensing. This was actual clarity, like my eyeslids were disolving with holes in a manner akin to the ozone layer - brief glimpses through the darkness, through the sheets.

I pushed a little further, focusing on one item, one vision. I saw the room around me. I rose; but I didn't really rise. I was still lying on the bed, yet I was also "out." I was fully aware from point A to point B of the events transpiring. For a moment, I thought that I had pushed myself outside of my body, a conscious astral projection; but upon recollecting the dream in question, I realized that the time and scenario placed me 10 - 12 hours earlier, producing evidence of a lucid dream instead. The clarity of lucid dreams are uncanny, especially when produced from a conscious descent into the dream state. Despite my proficiency at lucid dreaming, I'm always amazed at the immediate sense of altered reality. I took the time exploring my surroundings - this being the first clear, conscious lucid dream since living in my new apartment.

I floated… I didn't walk; and it didn't take long before I left the apartment right through the Eastern wall and began to explore the exterior world through this dream. I discovered that it was a beautiful night, and it was actually at this point that I was able to determine that this was indeed a lucid dream and not an astral projection. It was daylight back in the waking world, not night time.

I decided to review the night before and travelled to the carnival in Cinnaminson. Flying over the heights of the trees and the feris wheel, I took in the night scenary and the display of lights and magic.Unfortunately, my time was cut short by the audible banging of the apartment's maintenance workers hammering siding into the side of my apartment. I was jarred awake, but highly satisfied with the trip. It had been too long since I last took a trip into lucidity. I had nearly forgotten just how much fun it was.
